How shoudl I go about purchasing a computer?

My current system is going on 8 years and running Windows 98. I bought it from Dell using an e-check (they deduct the money directly from a checking account). Dell no longer has this policy and requires a CREDIT CARD, which I DO NOT HAVE. A local man that runs a computer store said he’d build me a system with Windows XP as he did not think Windows Vista was a good OS. Then someone else told me this was a bad idea. This guy might go out of business and if I have a problem with his computer, there will be no one that can or will want to repair a custom computer. All the systems in places like CompUSA, Best Buy and Circuit City all have Vista installed and no software. Please help me decide what to do. Thanks.

its not a bad idea to have someone custom build a system. those places usually stay in business a long time. people like the personal interaction, instead of just sometiket number. Vista is not that bad. i had to get use to it. and i actually like it now. if you want xp go for a custom, if you want vist, buy one from a chain store.

Should i buy this phone outright or on a plan?

My phone has broken recently, and the quote (from 3 different repair shops) was almost as much as i bought it for 2 years ago, so i need a new phone.

I need help deciding:

HTC Touch 3G

A)

Outright: $529
stay on optus prepaid, $30 lasts 30 days, i get $360 credit, and i use nearly all of it.

OR

B)

$49 per month, 24 month contract with optus
gives me $300 worth of credit (which is enough)

————

now the challange is, I’m broke. i have about $1000 in savings, i’m unemployed (due to illness), and on government payments of $244 per forghtnight. I’m a full time uni student.

I need the phone to sync with outook calendar directly (not via software like nokia’s PC suite), and to text.

I have a dodgy old phone that i can call and text on, but not the calendar, and i need it.

can someone help me decide what to do?

Should i buy it outright, or pay the bit extra to pay for it over a period of time?

Thanks!

I would go on prepaid. Not having enough credit sucks, but if you’re on a plan and can’t pay on time then they charge heaps more.
But if you’re going to go back to work soonish (within a month or so) then go on a plan, because then you can get more credit!
Also, make sure you do heaps of research to make sure you’re not getting ripped off.

XP won’t start?

I have a 6 month old dell deminsion 1501 laptop running XP.I got a warning that I had a virus and spyware on it.After running a brand new version of spy sweeper it showed many spyware programs. After quaraentining and deleting them as per the software instructions,it prompted me for a restart which I did.
When I restart windows the windows is starting screen comes on with the moving bar, then the screen comes on which asks to click on a user name when I click on a name (all names do have the same result)it say’s loading personal settings…the the entire screen says Warning:spyware detected. No taskbar or stsrt button. It does this in both standard and safe mode starts and all screen names.
I’ve tried:
-reboot
-safe mode
-booting from a system disk
-C.Alt.DEL.
The warning screen stays until I power down.
After many starts …….nothing I tried calling webroot for support more nothing unless I give them a credit card first!
Thanks for any help, our school can’t afford a repair bill or a new P.C.

Start it in safe mode, use the start tab on ur keyboard if it will work.If it does,go to control panel>add or remove programs and delete spy sweeper. If everything will work normally after that,go to threatfire.com,download and install Threatfire, then run a full scan.

ipod to itunes?

FREE FULL VERSION SOFTWARE NO BUYING, REGISTERING, LIMITED TRIAL to transfer ipod to computer then add that playlist to itunes. i have to repair my ipod and i dontwana lose 3000 songs. free, full version, no money credit card check, registering, demo.

You don’t need to download anything.

This is how you get all the songs/videos/games/etc. from your iPod to your computer. I’m going to write step-by-step instructions on how to do it, but I’m also gonna provide a link that shows pics and stuff of how to do it because it can seem a little confusing sometimes.

NOTE: If you bought ALL of your music/etc. from iTunes, simply log into the new iTunes and plug in your iPod. Then sync it. A box will pop up and ask if you want to transfer your music. Click Yes. If you got your music from CDs, or off the internet, etc. then follow the directions below.

Keep in mind that all computers are different. If this doesn’t work for you, I’m sorry. Email me at princessgreen@gmail.com (or kween_faerie_3@yahoo.com) and I’ll try to help you out!

STEP 1:
- Plug in your iPod. iTunes should open up. If not, then open it how you normally open. Wait until it connects with the iPod.

STEP 2:
- A message will pop up and ask if you want to erase this iPod and sync with the iTunes library (or sometimes it asks if you want to transfer your music). Click Cancel.

STEP 3:
- Make sure you are on the iPod Options page (your iPod should pop up under Devices; click on it). Make sure the box that says "Enable disk use" is CHECKED.

STEP 4:
- Exit iTunes. Don’t eject it, though.

STEP 5:
- Go to your iTunes music folders. (It’s usually located in Start > My Documents > My Music > iTunes.) Delete the XML and ITL files.

STEP 6:
- Go to Start > My Computer. Then click on Tools > Folder Options > the "View" tab. In Advanced Settings (under Files and Folders) click "Show hidden files and folders". Then click OK.

STEP 7:
- Go to Start > My Computer. Click on your iPod (for instance, mine says "VICKY’S IPOD (:F)". See the slightly see-through iPod_Control folder? Right click on it and scroll down to "Send to … " and pick My Documents. NOTE: You can save it anywhere on your computer, but to make it easy I’m just going to pick a spot for you.

STEP 8:
- It will take a few minutes to copy everything. When it’s done, unhide the iPod_Control folder that you just copied to My Documents (NOT the iPod_Control that is on your iPod!) by right-clicking on it. Scroll down to Properties. Then uncheck the Hidden attribute. A message will pop up and ask if you want to apply this to this folder, subfolders, and files. Make sure this option is chosen, and click OK. (You MUST do this step.)

STEP 8:
- Open iTunes. Remember that your iPod is still connected to the computer. You will get the same messages asking if you want to erase this iPod and sync it with the iTunes library, unless you chose "Do not ask me again". Click Cancel.

STEP 9:
- At the top, click on Edit > Preferences. Choose the "Advanced" tab. Make sure "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" are checked.

STEP 10:
- From iTunes, choose File (at the top) > Add Folder to Library. Navigate to the iPod_Control folder and click OK.

STEP 11:
- The files will begin to copy into your iTunes library. You might want to take this time to write down all your playlists, because when you sync your iPod again you’ll lose them.

STEP 12:
- After your library fills up, simply click on your iPod under Devices and sync it! It will ask if you want to erase the songs and sync. Just click Yes. It doesn’t matter now because all of your songs are on your computer.

Sometimes, for an unkown reason, songs are copied into iTunes with four-letter titles (ex: WGYT or JSFU). I’m sorry, I don’t know any way to correct that aside from doing them each manually. Keep in mind that this is a FREE tutorial. You’re not paying for anything, so just be happy that you got your songs =D

"Internet flaw could let hackers take over the Web" New World Order 1-Govt hacker BEAST super-PC know-allNOW?

By Glenn Chapman AFP – Wednesday, July 9 SAN FRANCISCO

Computer industry heavyweights are hustling to fix a flaw in the foundation of the Internet that would let hackers control traffic on the World Wide Web.

Major software and hardware makers worked in secret for months to create a software "patch" released on Tuesday to repair the problem, which is in the way computers are routed to web page addresses.

"It’s a very fundamental issue with how the entire addressing scheme of the Internet works," Securosis analyst Rich Mogul said in a media conference call.

"You’d have the Internet, but it wouldn’t be the Internet you expect. (Hackers) would control everything."

The flaw would be a boon for "phishing" cons that involve leading people to imitation web pages of businesses such as bank or credit card companies to trick them into disclosing account numbers, passwords and other information

Best buy question about Performance service Plan… PLEASE Help!!! Return laptop policy due to damage?Replace?

Hi,
I had recently brought a laptop into bestbuy for a software repair. when i came home, my 4 year old nephew got a hold of it, and took it outside and well.. threw it off the deck. ( very embarresing.) I have a 3 year performance service plan at bestbuy. My question is, if i bring it back to bestbuy, will they give me a store credit? or will they just give me a replacment laptop? I would rather have a store credit because Ive had problems with this laptop since i got it. ( oh, and its WAYYYY to damaged to be repaired)

So wat do you guys think? Will they give a store credit?? Or just replace it?
Please put how u know if they will either replace it or give me a credit.

Thank you very much!!!!

"Parts and Labor Coverage- We cover all the parts and labor necessary to return your product to factory specifications. If we cannot repair your product, we will provide a replacement."

Hard to say, because they’re more likely to replace something that doesn’t look as if it was dropped. Not saying it’s your fault, but since people abuse the system, it might be tough to get them on your side.

Illegal to refuse a refund?

I have a small computer repair shop. I operate on tight tight finances and my policy has always been that any hardware sold has a 30 day replacement or repair warranty, and there is no warranty on software. I have had many happy customers buy computers from me and have computers repaired with me. I only accept cash, because there is no chargeback risk as with credit cards or checks. Recently I had a customer purchase a laptop from me, bring it back and say she is not happy with it. Claims it will not play video games her son wants to play on it. I told her it is not powerful enough. (Not enough ram or processor speed). There is nothing wrong with the computer. I can’t afford to refund her but she claims its illegal to not refund money. I kicked her out but today I got a summons to appear in court for she is suing my business. I did nothing illegal here, how can she sue?

How can she sue? By not agreeing with your conclusion that there was nothing wrong with the computer. Whether she can win a lawsuit is another question. No law requires any sort of warranty beyond the implied warranties of fitness of merchantability. If the computer works, you have satisfied your implied warranty. You seem to have given an absolute warranty of 30 days, but with a limited remedy. The law in most places allows that.
She has no greater right to cancel the sale than you have to go to her home and demand a return of the computer.

It’s not missing anything, however you could stand to cut some stuff out, a resume is only supposed to be 1 page long. First of all, you only need to list your qualifications once, so cut the one in your resume out. Second, only list your two most qualified, recent job positions, they don’t need a over view of your whole working life. Lastly, as far as Education goes, list your school, your major, minor, and that’s it! They don’t care what classes you took.
