no unless your landlord reports to the credit file and I have seen none that do. Paying by check is just proof of timely payments

Not true at all. The method of payment (cash, check, money order, etc.) makes absolutely no difference on your credit history.

Get smarter friends.
Other things stupid people will tell you.
- Getting a cell phone will increase your score
- Carrying balances on credit cards is good for you – in reality it destroys credit.
- Renting furniture gives you a good score – totally false
- Pay day loans are good for ratings

Payments for rent or utilities do not help your credit score no matter how you pay them (since they are not supposed to be credit). However, not paying them can hurt your score.
Rent history may be a factor in getting a home loan. But not how you paid it, just how much you paid and whether you always paid on time, or not.
